Shingle Types
When it’s time to the roof of your Orlando home the sky is the limit for your roofing shingle options.
Here are some of the most popular options of Orlando Roofing Shingle Types:
- Composition (asphalt shingles). Asphalt shingles are the most commonly used shingle on Orlando homes. They are the least expensive and can be used on any style house from contemporary to historic. Asphalt shingles come in low-cost 3-tab shingle to architectural shingles with extra durability and style. There are many colors, types, and manufacturers. Asphalt shingles are suitable for most residential applications, they are easy to repair, fire resistant and have a life-span of between 15–30 years.
Some downside to asphalt shingles is that they scar easily when hot, they are subject to mildew and moss, and they are environmentally unfriendly.
- Wood shingles or shake shingles. These are frequently used with Bungalows, ranch style homes, cottages and historic homes. Wood shingles have a natural look and weather to a soft grey. They offers some insulation value, blend in with the environment, are easy to repair or replace and long lasting if maintained (30–50 year life expectancy).
Some drawbacks are that wood shingles are expensive, high maintenance, tendency to rot, split, mold, and mildew and have a poor fire rating unless chemically treated.
- Metal (steel, aluminum, tin, copper). Metal roofs look great on Key West style homes, historic homes, wood homes…Metal roofing is available in different “looks” like cedar shingles, slate, or standing seam. Metal roofing is available in many colors so you can have a more customized look. Metal roofing is durable and long lasting.
